Virgil van Djik headed the ball in first for a Dutch goal, but Keito Nakamura drew Japan level seven minutes later. But then Crysencio Summerville scored to give the Dutch a 2-1 lead.

Before the three goals, the game saw fast and furious attacking football from both sides. Netherlands’ Donyell Malen had two great chances, but each time found Japan keeper Zion Suzuki blocking his shots.

The draw was a relief for Japan, but it was the end of a proud record for the Asian side. Japan had won their opening match in three of the last four editions of the FIFA World Cup, including 2-1 victories over Colombia in 2018 and Germany in 2022.
