The US Central Command on Sunday declared that the Strait of Hormuz is open for all vessels to lawfully transit the strategic waterway amid Iran’s announcement that it has shut Hormuz over Washington’s attack and alleged breach of ceasefire and Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). In a post on X, the US Central Command wrote, “US forces are positioned and prepared to ensure that freedom of navigation remains available despite unwarranted Iranian aggression, harassment, threats, and arbitrary declarations. Iran does not control the strait. Traffic is flowing.”
Iran targeted US facilities in Bahrain, Jordan, Qatar, Oman and Kuwait, raising fears of a wider conflict in the region. Iran’s Revolutionary Guards said they destroyed a command and control center and drone hangars in Jordan, targeted a US radar site in Kuwait, attacked US aircraft carrier support and refueling platforms in Oman and destroyed a jet maintenance centre and command facility in Qatar.

The US military said it carried out a third round of strikes against Iran on Saturday, after Revolutionary Guard forces struck a Cyprus-flagged container ship passing through the Strait of Hormuz, according to US Central Command. The ship, identified as the M/V GFS Galaxy, caught fire and suffered serious damage to its engine room; one crew member is unaccounted for. CENTCOM said the strikes, ordered by President Trump, aim to keep pressure on Iran’s capacity to threaten commercial shipping in the strait. Trump has separately said roughly 1,000 US missiles are trained on Iran, with more in reserve, and warned of an overwhelming response if Tehran tries to have him killed.
