Gyaneshwari Yadav, Bindyarani Devi added to India’s medal rush in weightlifting by winning silver and bronze respectively on Monday. This takes India’s medal tally to six, of which five have come in weightlifting alone. The one non-weightlifting medal also was won by para powerlifter Jhandu Kumar. The medal-winning sports could change soon for India though, with a host of athletes from the country qualifying for their respective finals in track and field. The names to looking out for later in the day include Sarvesh Kushare, both in high jump, Rakeshbhai Bhatt and Shreyansh Trivedi in men’s t38 100m and Tejas Shirse in men’s 110m hurdles. Meanwhile, there could be still more weightlifting joy for India with Ajay Babu competing in men’s 70kg later in the day.
On Sunday, Mirabai Chanu smashed the Commonwealth Games record on Sunday and won the gold medal (India’s first at Glasgow 2026) in the women’s 48kg weightlifting event. Rishikanta Singh Chanambam claimed a silver medal in the men’s 60kg weightlifting event, which was India’s second medal at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games.

Twelve years after making her major debut at Glasgow’s SEC Arena as a 20-year-old, Indian weightlifter Mirabai Chanu returned to the same venue to claim her fourth consecutive Commonwealth Games medal and complete a golden hat-trick. Despite a tense start with missed first attempts in both the snatch and clean & jerk, she quickly regained her composure to comfortably cement her reign over the 48kg category.
