Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has brushed off President Donald Trump’s newly unveiled sanctions campaign, calling it an attempt to distract from domestic troubles in Washington rather than a genuine strategy against Tehran. Writing on X, Araghchi claimed the move was designed to distract from Washington’s “unprecedented debt & surging interest costs”.

The remarks came a day after Trump used Truth Social to announce what he billed as “Economic Warfare and Isolation on an unprecedented scale” against Iran, following the breakdown of negotiations between the two countries. The president cautioned that any nation whose banks, businesses, airports or government bodies help sustain Iran’s economy would face what he described as “TREMENDOUS Economic Consequences.” path would backfire on Washington. He warned that doubling down on failed policies would only bring further defeat and the “enmity of Iranians,” and went further by accusing the US of waging economic terrorism that endangers the global economy and other nations’ sovereignty.

Five key developments:

  1. Araghchi’s rebuke: Iran’s top diplomat dismissed Trump’s sanctions push as a smokescreen for America’s fiscal woes, not a serious Iran policy.
  2. Trump’s “crushing” operation: The US president announced what he called the most severe economic action ever taken against Iran, targeting oil smuggling, swap lines, front companies and ship registries.
  3. Warning to third parties: Trump cautioned that countries offering Iran an economic lifeline would face severe financial retaliation of their own.
  4. Bessent’s Monday briefing: The Treasury Secretary confirmed further specifics on the sanctions regime will be released at a press conference early next week.
  5. Alaska Plane Crash: Eight killed in charter plane crash near remote site in western Alaska.
