East Bengal beat Mohun Bagan Super Giant 4-1 to win their 17th Durand Cup title. They have thus equalled Bagan as the most succesfull team in the 139-year history of the tournament. Mohun Bagan Super Giant had more possession and took more shots in the first half and yet, at the end of it, they trailed East Bengal 4-1. Contrastingly, there were no goals at all in the second half. Despite Bagan having far more possession, it was East Bengal who had the better chances to score and in the end, the latter won the final 4-1.
Edmund Lalrindika scored a first-half hat-trick while Bipin Singh started the scoring for East Bengal in the 10th minute. Edmund scored just two minutes later and then scored again in the 22nd minute to leave Bagan trailing 3-0. Manvir Singh got one back for Bagan right after the drinks break in the 33rd minute but Edmund then restored East Bengal’s three-goal lead in the 44th minute. Bagan showed more attacking intent in the early exchanges but East Bengal suddenly took a 2-0 lead when they scored twice in two minutes just after the 10th minute in the Durand Cup final.

Sahal Abdul Samad’s 52nd minute strike and some dogged defending towards the end of the match helped Mohun Bagan Super Giant beat East Bengal in the opening match of the 2026 Durand Cup at the Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata on Saturday. In what was an end-to-end game, Samad turned in the ball after it was squared to him by Kiyan Nassiri from the right to put Bagan ahead.
East Bengal attacked with everything they had and Vishal Kaith pulled off a couple of big saves to keep Bagan’s lead intact. Both sides are being led by new coaches, althought East Bengal’s Antonio Lopez Habas knows all about the intensity of this fixture as he coached Bagan for a number of seasons in the past. Panagiotis Dilmperis, on the other hand, has coached Punjab FC for the past two seasons and so has been in India long enough to know that there are no dead rubbers or friendly matches when it comes to Kolkata derbies. He celebrated the result like he won the Durand Cup itself.
