England vs New Zealand (ENG vs NZ) 1st Test, Day 3: No play was possible on Day 3 due to the elements. On Day 2, New Zealand built on test debutant Devon Conway’s chanceless double-hundred by taking two early England wickets before Rory Burns and Joe Root mounted a recovery.

Replying to New Zealand’s first-innings total of 378 that was anchored by Conway’s 347-ball 200, England reached stumps on 111/2 with Burns unbeaten on 59 and Root on 42 not out, their partnership up to 93. It was England’s day at the home of cricket, with Root’s team gaining a foothold in the match after an opening day dominated by the New Zealanders.

Rain wins Day 3. The umpires have delivered the final verdict. This means day four and five will be extended days with play going on upto 11:30pm IST and with 98 overs to be played. England, as they were at the beginning of the day, are 111/2 trailing by 267 runs in the first innings.

The drizzle has become lighter, that’s the good news. The bad news is that the last break of the day has been called. So, a 20-minute wait is coming up. We hope there’s something other than waiting on the other side of this wait.

It is one of those days at Lord’s. We keep checking for updates from time to time but the rain-gods look to be stealing the show in what was supposed to be the moving day. It makes it easier for New Zealand though, with the heavy run cushion. Root and England are sad.

A reminder of where things currently sit coming into Day 3

The covers remain on but the forecast looks promising.

A heavy drizzle at Lord’s and the start of Day 3 could be delayed.

So it’s the third day of the first Test and we are in for a good contest between bat and ball.
