Explosion struck Iran’s capital, Tehran, on Saturday after Israel claimed it launched a “preventive missile attack” on the country, witnesses told news agency Associated Press.
Videos from Tehran showed thick smoke rising up over a large area. The smoke was visible from several kilometres away.
The blasts occurred after an earlier strike apparently targeted an area near the offices of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, AP reported, adding that authorities have offered no official casualty information from the strikes.

Israel’s Defence Minister Israel Katz claimed that his country has declared a state of emergency.
Moreover, Israel’s military said it had protectively sounded air raid sirens in areas across the country “to prepare the public for the possibility of missiles being launched toward Israel” in retaliation, as per news agency Reuters.
Following the attack, Iran shut down its airspace, whereas, sirens were sounded across Israel at the same time, AP noted.
The explosion comes amid heightened tensions between Iran and the United States over Tehran’s nuclear programme.
