Sri Lanka beat Bangladesh by 97 runs
Mahmudullah’s effort ends in the 43rd over. Bangladesh are all out for 189. Sri Lanka win by 97 runs and claim their first World Super League points.
Bangladesh are losing their tail in a hurry now. Afif departs in the 38th over. Mehidy Hasan becomes Chameera’s fourth victim in the 39th. And there’s Chameera’s five-wicket haul as he rattles Taskin Ahmed’s stumps. Shoriful Islam comes in at 10 and blasts a six. They’re going out with a fight, it seems. Mahmudullah, on 39*, still in the middle.
BAN 171/8 after 40
Afif Hossain has joined Mahmudullah, with the latter now looking to step on the gas. A run-a-ball partnership builds as Bangladesh prepare for the last push. Boundaries still hard to come by.
BAN 157/5 after 37
Mosaddek gets to his 50, off 70 balls, but then decides he is in a hurry to get back to the dressin room. Ramesh Mendis gets his 2nd wicket. Mosaddek reverse slogs but gets a top edge which is gobbled up easily. Bangladesh, with half their side dismissed and miracle man Mahmudullah left to bat with the lower order, need 162 runs in the remaining 110 balls.
BAN 125/5
Mahmudullah tries to get his innings underway with some pushes through the cricle. Mosaddek doing the majority of the scoring, gets a third boundary – a rare event in this innings – with a tickle down to fine leg. The required run rate is well above 8 now.
BAN 120/4 after 30
Mushfiqur’s adamant resistance ends. He hadn’t found the fence yet, tries to step outside and goes for a wild heave but is caught at long on. A 56-run partnership comes to an end. Mosaddek is joined by Mahmudullah.
BAN 84/4 after 23.2
The first six of the innings comes in the 18th over, off Mosaddesk’s blade. A short ball from Chamika Karunaratne is pulled over fine leg for a maximum. The 4th wicket partnership between Mosaddek and Mushfiqur has brought some momentum back on the chasing team’s side. A long way to go still.
BAN 70/3 after 20
Bangladesh find themselves in some bother. Mushfiqur, who is yet to find the fence, and Mosaddek, who has found it once with one display of classy wristwork, try to weather the storm. The required run rate has now inched up to 7.
BAN 51/3 after 16
Third wicket! And it’s the destructive Chameera who strikes again. Tamim is given out caught behind. Some controversy as Tamim does not believe he had got bat to ball, but the Review offers insufficient evidence to overturn the decision. Tamim walks back for 17. Mosaddek Hossain joins Mushfiqur.
BAN 29/3 after 10
Tamim hits the first boundary of the innings with a drive in the 7th over. Binura Fernando the bowler, who also concedes the second boundary of the innings, again Tamim the batsman looking to get on with things.
BAN 28/2 after 9
Shakib al Hasan enters at 3 to unite with Tamim, the score inches along in singles now. Until Chameera strikes again! Two wickets in two overs from Chameera. Gets a ball to climb on Shakib this time, who mistimes his pull shot. Mushfiqur Rahim now joins Tamim.
BAN 11/2 after 4
Tamim Iqbal and Mohammad Naim step out for Bangldesh to begin the chase of 287. Dhananjaya de Silva bowls the 1st over. 2 runs off it. There’s a wicket off the first ball of the second over. Naim gives a catch through to Kusal Mendis, Dushmanta Chameera strikes.
BAN 2/1 after 1.1
Dhananjaya (55*) kept up the fight till the end but after Perera’s dismissal, the visitors lost momentum. Ramesh came up with 8* towards the end. Bangladesh scalped wickets at regular intervals in the final ten with Taskin registering 4/46. SL: 286/6 (50 overs)
Bangladesh continue to pick up wickets in the final ten, as it’s time for Dickwella (7) to walk back to the pavilion. After Shakib’s delivery to Dhananjaya, a fumble up leads to Dickwell getting runout by Shoriful. Next up, Wanindu Hasaranga. SL: 234/5 (43 overs)
Kusal Perera lost his wicket for 120 runs. Perera’s brilliant knock comes to an end. And it’s Mahmudullah who takes a fine catch.
Kusal Parera, who is playing his 104th ODI today, has scored 2988 runs at an average of 31.79 and a strike rate of 92.39. Currently playing at 120 with 11 fours and one six, Parera may cross past his earlier best score of 135 runs if he continues to bat like this.
With an unbeaten 50-run stand between Kusal Perera and Dhananjaya de Silva, Sri Lanka have crossed past 200 in 36 overs. Perera, who hit his 6th ODI ton, seems to have put Sri Lanka on track for a bigger total from here.
99 balls, 10 fours and a six. A fine hundred by Kusal Perera, a captain’s innings! He was dropped on 99* in the penultimate ball of the over but all that matters is the three digit score on the board. Time for upping the runrate now then? SL: 177/3 (32 overs)
After 33 balls without a single boundary, the visitors finally break the deadlock as Perera pulls away for a four facing Taskin. The Sri Lanka skipper moves to 95* after a single. On the other end, his partner Dhananjaya de Silva is on 5*. SL: 170/3 (30 overs)
Taskin Ahmed does it again! He comes back into the attack and breaks the partnership between the two Kusals. A short of a length delivery by the bowler and Kusal Mendis (22) threw his hands at it… Tamim completes the catch on mid-off. SL: 152/3 (25.2 overs)
