Pant ended up falling off the first ball of the second session and Jurel then batted with the tail, first with Manav Suthar and then with Mohammed Siraj. He got into the 90s but then had to wait to cross the final bridge with rain interrupting play while he was on 95. Tea was taken and the start of the third session was also delayed, prolonging Jurel’s wait. He remained calm, with Siraj doing well to hold fort at the other end, after play resumed and got to the mark in the 136th over. However, the mark was reached with the riskiest of singles, with Jurel being saved only by the fact that the throw from the fielder was off target.

Jurel is the second Indian to have scored a century on this tour. Devdutt Padikkal has scored centuries in both Tests, making 167 in the first innings of the first Test and 117 on Day 1 of the second. Siraj’s watch ended the next ball itself and Jurel looked to switch gears the next over, hitting a six off Fernando. Shubman Gill finally declared at the end of that over after Prasidh Krishna hit the last ball for four. Jurel walked back unbeaten on 115 off 177 and India declared on a score of 503/9.
