Donald Trump announces two-week cease-fire with Iran, says subject to Hormuz opening

US President Donald Trump has announced that he has agreed ⁠to ​a two-week ceasefire with Iran, less than two hours before his deadline  for Tehran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz or face widespread attacks on ​its civilian ​infrastructure. Iran has accepted the ceasefire.

Trump posted  on social medai on Tuesday that the deal was subject to Iran’s agreement to pause its blockade of oil and gas supplies through the ⁠strait, which handles ⁠about one-fifth of global oil shipments.

“This will be a double sided ⁠CEASEFIRE!” ‌Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform. “The ​reason for doing so is ‌that we have already met and exceeded all Military objectives, and are very far ‌along with a ​definitive ​Agreement concerning ​Longterm PEACE with Iran, and PEACE in the Middle East.”

Trump said Iran ​had presented a 10-point proposal that ⁠was a “workable basis” for negotiations and that he expected an agreement to be “finalized and consummated” during ‌the ⁠two-week ceasefire.

“Based on conversations with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Asim Munir, of Pakistan, and wherein they requested that I hold off the destructive force being sent tonight to Iran, and subject to the Islamic Republic of Iran agreeing to the COMPLETE, IMMEDIATE, and SAFE OPENING of the Strait of Hormuz, I agree to suspend the bombing and attack of Iran for a period of two weeks.

“On behalf of the United States of America, as President, and also representing the Countries of the Middle East, it is an Honor to have this Longterm problem close to resolution.”

The White House’s official account on X immediately shared Trump’s TruthSocial post as an official statement.

Israel has also agreed to the ceasefire in a report that was carried by Israel’s public broadcaster Kan.

Iran’s response to cease-fire announcement

Iran responded shortly afterwards that it accepted the ceasefire, mediated by Pakistan, and that it will allow safe passage of ships along the Hormuz with the coordination of its armed forces.

A statement by Iran’s Foreign Affairs Minister Seyed Abbas Aragchi said his country’s Supreme National Security Council confirmed the ceasefire proposal reached with the approval of new Supreme Leader Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei.

Pakistan has been acting as a mediator in the US-Israeli war with Iran, with Trump naming Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif as one of the people he has held conversations with.

The country’s Field Marshal Asim Munir is also named in his Truth Social post. They “requested that I hold off the destructive force being sent tonight to Iran”, Trump said

Here are the details and conditions set out by the US President:

  • Trump said he had agreed to “suspend the bombing and attack of Iran for a period of two weeks”.
  • Trump says this followed Pakistan’s PM Sharif and Field Marshal Asim Munir asking the US president to hold off “the destructive force being sent tonight to Iran” and Iran agreeing to the “COMPLETE, IMMEDIATE, and SAFE OPENING of the Strait of Hormuz”.
  • He also said that the ceasefire would be “double sided”, although he did not specifically mention Israel, which has also been attacking Iran and Lebanon.
  • Trump said the US has received a “workable” 10 point proposal from Iran and that a “two week period will allow the Agreement to be finalised and consummated” and that the “Longterm problem” is now “close to resolution”.

All of thee came just over an hour before the deadline that Trump had set was to expire.
