Speaking at a news briefing, Trump said there were even stronger methods on trade tariffs available to him following the court’s decision.
The Supreme Court struck down Donald Trump’s far-reaching global tariffs in a 6-3 decision, handing him a stinging loss on an issue central to his economic agenda. The ruling centres on tariffs imposed under an emergency powers law, including the sweeping “reciprocal” tariffs he levied on nearly every other country.
The high court ruled that Trump’s use of an emergency powers law to set import duties without congressional approval was illegal, stating that the Constitution vests the power to impose taxes, including tariffs, in Congress.
Trump’s defeat before the conservative-majority court came despite a series of short-term legal wins that had allowed him to push ahead with key aspects of his broader policy agenda.
The case marks the first major component of Trump’s sweeping policy programme to come squarely before the nation’s highest court, a bench he helped shape during his first term with the appointment of three conservative justices.
