The US justice department has released thousands of pages of documents and photographs linked to its investigation into the late financier and convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
The files were published on Friday under a transparency law passed by Congress, after months of political pressure. Large sections remain redacted.
Why the files were released
The documents were made public under the Epstein Files Transparency Act, which requires the release of unclassified records linked to Epstein and his longtime associate Ghislaine Maxwell.
Epstein died in jail in 2019 while awaiting trial on federal sex-trafficking charges. Maxwell was convicted in 2021 and is serving a 20-year prison sentence.
Donald Trump faced pressure from both parties to allow the release, according to Reuters.

What the files show and what they do not
The Guardian reports that many images are undated and released without context. Some documents remain hidden to protect victims, avoid interfering with investigations, or prevent the release of abusive material.
Experts say the documents may not provide a full picture of Epstein’s network, despite the scale of the release. More material is expected to be published in the coming weeks.
