There’s still time for Javokhir Sindarov’s World Championship match against titleholder D Gukesh, but on Saturday, he tasted a win against another Indian World Champion, Viswanathan Anand. Playing on the Icon board for Fyers American Gambits, Sindarov took down PBG Alaskan Knights’ Anand with the white pieces to lead his team’s charge on the opening day of the 2026 Global Chess League in Bengaluru.
It was Gambits captain N Srinath who won the toss and opted to play white against Alaskan Knights, and the gamble paid off handsomely. Both the Icon and Prodigy boards delivered for them.
Marc’Andria Maurizzi delivered the final blow against a desperate Abhimanyu Mishra, who knew a draw was not an option after all remaining matches ended in shared points and his team trailed 3-0 following Anand’s loss. In a position where Mishra could have shut the game, he lost his way with just seconds left on the clock, eventually losing his game as Gambits started their campaign with a commanding 10-4 win.

For both the young Frenchman Maurizzi and the Gambits, this wasn’t the only win of the day. The side played the fourth match and steamrolled the most successful team in GCL history, Triveni Continental Kings.
The Loek van Wely-led side came into the contest against Gambits after an upset loss to Ganges Grandmasters in a closely fought game. TCK, the two-time champions who have reached the finals in every GCL season, lost their campaign opener 10-9 against Ganges. On individual boards, Aravindh Chithambaram and Pranav V gave them much-needed wins against Leinier Dominguez and Leon Mendonça with black pieces, notching up eight points. However, Wei Yi vs Levon Aronian, Zhu Jiner vs Polina Shuvalova, and Alexandra Kosteniuk vs Stavroula Tsolakidou all ended in losses, nullifying the good work from Pranav and Aravindh.
On the top board, Alireza Firouzja was held to a draw by Ian Nepomniachtchi.

The day turned worse for TCK as they were thrashed by Gambits 14-5, with Aravindh, Wei Yi, and Pranav losing their respective games to Nihal Sarin, Daniil Dubov, and Maurizzi.
In Game 3, defending champions Alpine APL Pipers were pushed to the limit by CheQ Mumba Masters. But wins from Vidit Gujrathi and Koneru Humpy with the black pieces earned them two crucial extra points as the Magnus Carlsen-led side began their title defence with a 10-8 victory.
