India Open Super 750 tournament will be shifted to Guwahati for the 2028 edition due to clash with Republic Day in New Delhi, Badminton Association of India secretary Sanjay confirmed on Sunday.
The tournament, usually held at the IG Indoor Stadium in New Delhi, will move to the National Center of Excellence of Badminton in Guwahati for one season due to the dates clashing with the celebration of the Republic Day in the capital city.
“The 2027 India Open will happen in India. But for 2028, we might shift it to Guwahati because around 25th January to 30th January clashes with the 26th January celebration. In this area, it becomes very difficult for players’ movement, for practice, and for the tournament as well,” said Mishra after the conclusion of the World Championships.
The 2026 India Open was criticized for pollution and there were demands to shift it out of the January to February window. “Changing the window is not in our hands. BWF decides the calendar and it decided upto 2027 and changing the date of one event will mean messing up the whole calendar,” he said.
In the recently announced BWF calendar for 2027 and 2028, India Open is scheduled from February 2 to 7 in 2027 and from January 25 to 30 in 2028.
“The event will return to Delhi in 2029 and we will see if BWF will change the window then,” he added.

He said that multiple countries have placed bids but India is confident after hosting the World Championships.
“There are other countries in the race also but we are confident of winning the bid with the show we had put up in Delhi for seven days,” said Mishra.
Earlier, India had hosted the 2014 edition of the Thomas and Uber Cup at Siri Fort in New Delhi.
