Nepal Flood Live Updates: India has handed over 10 tonnes of humanitarian aid to Nepal to support relief efforts following devastating floods. Rescue teams are searching for hundreds of people still missing after a massive mudslide triggered catastrophic flooding in Nepal’s Rasuwa district near the Tibet border on Wednesday. At least 160 people died in Nepal, while three more have died in the Tibet region. The floods swept through communities, destroyed roads and bridges, damaged hydropower projects and disrupted a key route connecting Nepal with Tibet. Experts say an ice-and-rock avalanche linked to a glacier, possibly triggered by seismic activity, is the likely cause.
Hundreds of tourists, workers and pilgrims missing
At least 403 people were reported missing in Nepal, including 341 foreign nationals. Among those unaccounted for are tourists and pilgrims travelling towards Mount Kailash, as well as workers involved in hydropower projects. The missing include citizens from India, the US, Australia, Britain, Canada, South Korea, Malaysia and Russia. China has separately reported 265 people missing in Tibet’s Gyirong County.

Indian nationals among those missing
The disaster has a significant India angle. Nepal’s tourism authorities have reported 105 Indian nationals and 37 NRIs among those whose whereabouts are being verified, with many Indians travelling towards the Kailash Mansarovar route. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has spoken to Nepal’s Prime Minister Balendra Shah and offered India’s full humanitarian assistance. The Indian Embassy in Kathmandu is coordinating with Nepalese authorities on the situation. Sunil Sharma, a Nepal tourism board spokesperson, told the Associated Press that 133 of the tourists were from India on a pilgrimage.
India sends aid as Bihar remains on alert
India has dispatched 10 tonnes of HADR assistance and essential medicines to support Nepal’s relief operations. The disaster has also triggered concern downstream in India, with Bihar placed on alert as swollen Himalayan rivers raise the risk of flooding.
What caused the flash floods?
Experts are investigating an ice-and-rock avalanche or glacier-related collapse as the likely trigger. A magnitude 4.4 earthquake was recorded near the Nepal-Tibet border before the disaster, while researchers have pointed to the exceptional speed of the flood wave and rapid rise in river levels. The region is particularly vulnerable to floods, landslides and glacial hazards as Himalayan temperatures rise.
Rescue operations underway
Nepal has sought help from India and China as rescue teams search for missing people in some of the worst-hit areas. The scale of destruction and difficult terrain are complicating rescue efforts, while authorities have warned people to stay away from the banks of major rivers including the Bhotekoshi, Trishuli and Narayani.
