Solar Eclipse 2026 Live Updates: Millions of people across Europe witnessed a rare total solar eclipse on Wednesday, as the Moon passed directly between the Sun and Earth, briefly plunging parts of the continent into darkness. Huge crowds gathered across northern and central Spain, where the event was particularly significant as the country’s first total solar eclipse in more than a century.

Spain steps up security amid wildfire risk

The eclipse triggered a major public safety operation in Spain, with more than 33,500 law enforcement officers deployed around observation areas and access routes. Authorities also established hundreds of official viewing sites. With temperatures rising above 35°C in several areas and wildfire risks remaining high, visitors were urged to follow restrictions and avoid activities that could spark fires.

Iceland draws eclipse chasers

Iceland also saw thousands of visitors for its first total solar eclipse since 1954, although cloudy conditions threatened to spoil views in some areas. Totality was also visible in parts of Portugal and Greenland, while a partial eclipse could be seen across much of Europe and parts of North America and northwestern Africa. NASA used aircraft and balloons to study how the sudden darkness and cooling affected Earth’s atmosphere.

Solar Eclipse 2026: from Iceland to Spain, where totality was seen

Totality: the Moon fully covers the Sun, revealing its corona

The Sun looked different depending on where you were:

.

Total eclipse

Sun 100% covered — a brief “daytime night”

Seen only along a narrow path: Greenland, western Iceland, northern Spain and a sliver of Portugal.

.

Partial eclipse

Sun only partly covered

Seen across a much wider area: most of Europe, north-west Africa and parts of North America.

2m 18s

Maximum totality — over the ocean about 45 km off Iceland’s west coast.

ISIceland

2m 13s

Longest on land, in the western Westfjords.

ESSpain

1st in 121 yrs

First total solar eclipse over Spain since 1905.

Up to 6M

Visitors expected along Spain’s eclipse path.

33,500+

Police deployed around viewing areas and access routes in Spain.

Wildfire risk

Heat and dry vegetation prompted major safety restrictions.
