US-Israel Attacks Iran Live News Updates: Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s daughter and grandson were killed in the US-Israeli strikes on Sunday, Iranian media reported. Earlier, United States President Donald Trump claimed that Khamenei was dead. However, Tehran has not issued a confirmation yet. The development comes as the Middle East enters a new volatile era following a massive, coordinated US-Israel military campaign across Iran on Saturday (February 28).
The scale of the escalation is unprecedented, marking the second time in eight months the Trump administration has used direct force against the Islamic Republic. Hundreds of civilians have been killed and wounded in US-Israel strikes, Iran told the UN Security Council on Sunday. Meanwhile, retaliatory strikes have spread across at least six neighbouring countries, including attacks on Dubai International Airport.
Current conflict status
- Casualties: The Iranian Red Crescent reports at least 201 killed and over 700 injured nationwide. Among the reported strikes is a girls’ school in southern Iran where at least 85 people are feared dead.
- Strategic targets: Strikes have hit IRGC command centres, missile launch sites, and air defence systems. Notable explosions were reported near the offices of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in Tehran.
- Leadership update: Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei is dead, Donald Trump claimed after reports claimed his body was found. Iran has not confirmed this yet. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi had earlier stated that both the Supreme Leader and President Masoud Pezeshkian were currently alive “as far as I know,” though a “near-total internet blackout” in Iran is hindering communications.
- Retaliation: Iran has launched hundreds of drones and missiles. While the US reports minimal damage to its bases, shrapnel from intercepted fire has caused injuries in Israel, and one fatality has been confirmed in Dubai, UAE.
- Regional impact: Major disruptions are occurring at airports in Kuwait, Abu Dhabi, and Dubai. Bahrain, Jordan, and Saudi Arabia have all reported intercepting incoming fire or drone activity.
Our analysis: This operation signifies the total collapse of recent nuclear diplomacy in Oman and Switzerland. By targeting symbols of government alongside military assets, the US-Israeli coalition is signaling a shift from containment toward active regime change.
The escalation
| Region | Reported impact | Status of US/Israeli forces |
| Tehran | Multiple strikes near Intelligence Ministry & Leadership compounds. | Continuing “waves” of aerial strikes. |
| Israel | Dozens of incoming missiles; 89 reported “lightly injured.” | High alert; Iron Dome active. |
| Persian Gulf | Strikes reported near the US 5th Fleet (Bahrain) and Ali Al-Salem base (Kuwait). | “Minimal damage” reported by CENTCOM. |
| Global markets | Risk to Strait of Hormuz (1/3 of sea-borne oil). | Oil prices monitoring for volatility. |
Official reactions
- White House: Spokesperson Karoline Leavitt stated that congressional leaders were briefed, though top Democrats like Rep. Hakeem Jeffries have decried the lack of formal authorisation for “an act of war.”
- United Nations: The Security Council held an emergency meeting today, where US and Iran representative exchanged warnings to each other.
- IAEA: The nuclear watchdog is monitoring Iranian facilities and currently reports “no evidence of radiological impact.”
