New Delhi:
Delhi has recorded 3,009 fresh COVID-19 cases and 252 deaths related to the disease in the past 24 hours, with a positivity rate of less than 4.76 per cent. This is the first time the national capital’s Covid positivity rate has fallen below 5 per cent since April 4.
The World Health Organisation (WHO) has declared Covid positivity rate below 5 per cent to be within the safe zone. This would now add pressure to lift the lockdown in place in Delhi. Medical experts have held the lockdown as the main factor behind the dip in daily cases amid the second wave of the pandemic, PTI reported.
The number of daily cases recorded in the past 24 hours is also been the lowest since April 1. This is the third consecutive day when Delhi’s count of daily new cases has remained below 4,000.
The number of active cases has now dropped below 36,000 at 35,683, the lowest since April 11. The recovery rate in the city is at 95.85 per cent while the death rate stands at 1.62 per cent.
Delhi has till now recorded 14,12,959 Covid cases and 22,831 deaths since the outbreak in early 2020.
The city has borne the worst of the second Covid wave that has swept the country since February this year. In many senses, Delhi turned into a microcosm of the nationwide desperation as medical facilities and resources fell short even as patients kept coming into hospitals.
So much so that several hospitals, including some of the biggest facilities, suffered an acute paucity of oxygen, beds, drugs, and vaccines, due to the sudden influx of patients not just from the city itself but from neighbourhood regions, too.
The Delhi government has even gone to court demanding its share of oxygen from the Centre.
